Türkiye Focuses on Artificial Intelligence and Quantum in 2026 Defense Technologies

Türkiye is preparing for a major transformation in defense technologies in 2026. Artificial intelligence, quantum, hypersonic systems, and autonomous technologies have been announced as priority R&D areas for the coming year.

The 2026 roadmap for Turkey's defense industry has been officially announced. The new program, published by the Presidency, clarifies next year's technology priorities, highlighting AI-based projects, quantum processing unit development initiatives, and hypersonic technologies. The plan includes a comprehensive transformation process aimed at utilizing strategic defense capabilities in both the military and civilian sectors. The program's primary objective is to reduce Türkiye's external dependence on critical technologies and achieve a strong international competitive position.

As part of the work carried out by the Presidency of Defense Industries, new R&D projects for artificial intelligence technologies will be launched. These studies are expected to be applied in a wide range of areas, from command and control systems to autonomous platforms. The development of a quantum-based processing unit has been one of the most notable aspects of the program. The framework agreement, planned to be signed within the year, aims to enable Türkiye to enter a concrete production phase in quantum technologies.

Cybersecurity was also a critical topic in the program. It was stated that efforts to develop cloud security, end-to-end encryption technologies, and domestic cyber defense solutions will accelerate throughout 2026. This initiative aims to establish domestic security infrastructures to meet the needs of public institutions and the private sector.

Autonomous systems have emerged as a key component of the defense industry's new goals. New testing processes and field trials are planned for the development of AI-powered autonomous technologies for use on land, air, and sea platforms. Officials stated that all of these efforts will benefit not only the defense field but also many other sectors, including transportation, energy, logistics, and manufacturing.

According to statements, the implementation of the program will increase Türkiye's domestic share of high-technology production. These steps are also expected to significantly contribute to defense exports in the long term, and new technologies are expected to enhance Türkiye's competitiveness in the international market.
